The Gavel endorses Gomez-Wanandi
By Gavel Media Editorial Board, Gavel Media Team, on February 21, 2012 7:29 PMThe Gomez-Wanandi ticket represent the type of change the Undergraduate Government of Boston College needs. The duo and its platform mark a shift in student culture that signals a trend in the Boston College administration listening to the underrepresented groups at BC. Not only have they promised to advocate for increased attention to hate crimes by administrators, Gomez-Wanandi seem best capable of establishing the needed accountability system between the student body and the administration.
This board feels Gomez-Wanandi is best able to increase student input in new University policy by promoting, as they have defined their UGBC experience by their inclusion of several groups on campus, including cultural groups. Their support for the establishment of a GLBTQ Resource Center and increased collaboration with the Women’s Resources Center staff is stronger than their opponents’ records regarding the issues these two groups aim to address.
In their platform they state their intent to invest in “dialogues regarding issues surrounding campus issues by establishing an all-inclusive on campus forum…as well as working with the Backgrounds of BC Committee to facilitate these discussions with Work with Boston College Counseling to create a GLBTQ resource space.” We at the Gavel feel this team is best equipped to provide students with real access to resources that will educate and expand awareness of these issues to the Boston College community.
There are many novel ideas that the team has for interacting with the rest of the BC community, like “UGBC on your Corner” initiatives and “Create-Your-Own” Directorship programs that provide students the chance to share their own talents, passions and ideas that may not exist currently, but that’s not why we’ve endorsed them. Gomez-Wanandi embody the new social, racial and gender changes necessary to propel BC and UGBC out of the aloof and elitist mindset and into our generation’s time period.
Tomorrow is the last day. Make sure you vote Gomez-Wanandi.

Highly unethical and questionable. This says a lot from this organization and their biased publications. With articles such as these, how do you expect to gain trust and credibility from the BC and greater community? A smarter move would have been to put both sides to INFORM the audience and encourage voting. This is yet another one against The Gavel, aka almost another “Observer.”
@Marianne: I’m no fan of the Gavel, but the Heights endorses, too. It’s tradition.
They are pretty shitty though.
Why would I vote for someone that couldn’t hold their RA position? Can I vote against someone?
Doesn’t sound very accountable to me
Not that this matters since no one cares about the Gavel anyways and an endorsement from them is probably harmful to a campaign, so thank you Gavel.
Let’s see…we have to choose between a couple of bros, or an egomaniac who’s done squat during her 2.5 years in UGBC (not to mention, couldn’t even last a semester as an RA.) This is nothing more than a popularity contest between two unqualified teams, and continues a trend of mediocre candidates winning because students vote superficially. Last year it was Joyce-Portes, this year it was Sullivan-Tonkovich who should have won (or at least advanced to the primaries) but I guess it’s all about the sexiest candidates, or who can get the most athletes to endorse them, right? As a minority and rso leader, this whole “let’s raise cultural awareness” bs is old and needs to stop. Why don’t we allocate funds towards useful, state of the art clubs and programs, instead of having another reggaeton night in the rat. And thanks for your opinion, Gavel, but since they’re running for SCHOOL president and VP, we should focus mainly on what they can do for our SCHOOL as a whole, not only for certain social groups. Myself, (and thousands of others, I’m sure) are going to sit this one out because neither one of these teams deserves a vote in their favor.
