New York Fashion Week is anything but average

On any given day, the streets of New York City are lined with some of the most stylish and fashion-forward people in the world. If you were under the impression that the glitz and glam of the Big Apple peaks around the holiday season you are wrong. Twice a year, the Mercedes Benz Fashion Week gets the city buzzing with the upcoming fashion trends, fantastic runway shows, celebrity appearances, late night after-parties, and of course, drama. This year’s Fashion Week ran from September 6-13 to set the stage for Spring 2013 style.

Designers brought their A-game this fall. They left everyone in the fashion world antsy to purchase and debut the spring season’s new bold colors, handbags, shoes, and more. All the usual designers were present in full, with a few newcomers to walk the Fashion Week runway, such as J.Crew.,  BCBGMaxazria, and Calvin Klein showing gorgeous dresses with unique necklines, in classic blacks and white palette. Alternatively, Michael Kors and Ralph Lauren stunned the audiences with stripes and Flamenco flare respectively in edgy purples, reds, and greens.

Another designer of note is Marc Jacobs, who is somehow capable of designing for three fabulous labels (Marc Jacobs, Marc by Marc Jacobs, and Louis Vuitton) each season. His looks centered around loud patterns and color combinations on oversized tops, leggings, and thick headbands. It will be easy to make a statement in any of these fabulous pieces this coming spring.

However, no matter how jaw-dropping the clothes on the catwalk are, the celebrities in the audience create just as much attention. Kim Kardashian and her boyfriend, Kanye West, were present in the front row at many shows including Marchesa. Catherine Zeta-Jones, Olivia Munn, and Katherine McPhee stopped by to see the Michael Kors runway presentation. Even Ryan Lochte, capitalizing on his recent fame due to success in the London games, came out for EleVen by Venus Williams.

One of the most “OMG” moments was when Liberty Ross, the betrayed wife of Rupert Sanders after the Kristen Stewart affair, stepped on Alexander Wang’s runway to model for the first time in over ten years. Her flawless and courageous appearance was absolutely the best revenge she could have gotten.

Beyond the runway, celebs also made their way to many of the after parties. Betsey Johnson celebrated her 70th birthday with a performance of “Girls Just Wanna Have Fun” by her dear friend Cyndi Lauper. Celebrity sightings caused New York to be even more chaotic than ever this year.

New York Fashion Week brings excitement, astonishing new looks to the runways, but most of all the freedom for all of New York to run wild with style. This year, like all the rest, the streets turn into a catwalk of their own because no fashionista is afraid to wear an extremely bold outfit. The week creates an environment of far out self-expression that celebrities and average New Yorkers alike live for each season. You can check out all of the news and photos here.
