All caught up in the vampire craze with the release of the latest “Twilight” film? Well, you’re behind this week. That’s because scientists are up in the sky currently searching for our favorite mythological creature, Bigfoot. That’s right. Anthropologist Jeffrey Meldrum is sweeping through the skies by blimp to prove the haters wrong.

What he’s lacking for his research is more than $300,000, which he’s asking for in private donations, so he can build the remote-controlled airship to float over the wilderness. Apparently obtaining the money thus far has been no easy task, perhaps because people find better outlets for donations than the search for the manlike ape. Or apelike man.
Either way, with all the popular shows dealing with the Sasquatch (i.e. Animal Planet’s “Finding Bigfoot”), Meldrum may strike gold yet. Two channels have already expressed interest in producing a reality show based on his search. Considering that “Finding Bigfoot” had a whopping 1.6 million viewers for its season premiere, the show would probably be pretty popular, too.

But don’t think that interest in Bigfoot is restricted to Americans, either. This past year, a team of about a dozen experts met in Russia for a Sasquatch conference (yes, those do exist). They announced by the conclusion that they proved the existence of the Yeti (or, Russian Bigfoot) with 95 percent certainty. This conclusion is supported by evidence of multiple sightings over the past two years by locals, some long hairs, an alleged “bed” in a cave out in the wilderness and some large, abominable-snowman-like footprints.
Other matters of discussion at the conference included the possible opening of a university research center out in Kemerovo, Russia where the sightings occurred, as well as plans to launch a more intense media campaign to increase public knowledge of the creature.
So, while vampire and werewolf fads come and go, there is no match for Bigfoot. Across the continents, scientists and enthusiasts alike will continue to discuss the Sasquatch for years to come. The only question that remains is whether the hunt for Bigfoot is what we really want. Or, much like the Loch Ness Monster, do we just want there still to be some mystery left in the world?
