If this week’s “How I Met Your Mother” episode shows us anything, it’s that the theory I raised earlier in the year, claiming that Barney’s mysterious half-sister is the mother, is pretty much trumped. Barney’s half-sister, Carly, played by Ashley Benson for all you “Pretty Little Liars” fans out there, finally shows her face as Ted’s new 20-year-old slam piece who has a weird fetish for older men.
The awkward part? Barney didn’t know Ted’s new girl was his half-sister until after Ted slept with her. Yikes. Although I didn't expect Carly to be thrown into the storyline like this (not to mention I am unnerved that my previously posted theory is most likely wrong), I thought she brought a refreshing spin to a season that has thus far been laden with recycled twists. Carly and Ted half-heartedly promise Barney they won’t sleep together again, but we’ll see where their hearts (and other parts) lead them. I wouldn’t mind if Carly stuck around for a few more episodes.
On a related note, Barney is finally over his obsession with one-night stands and non-committal sex. Ironically, this was achieved when Barney found out Ted slept with his half-sister. The beginning of a new Barney? I don’t know if I like it. I guess it’s necessary considering he’s engaged.
Robin simultaneously is basking in her own self-pity, playing the “woe is me” card because she finally put a ring on it and guys no longer want to fawn over her and give her free stuff. Poor Robin, life must be so hard…
As for Lily and Marshall, Baby Marvin is nowhere to be seen in the episode, which means there’s room for things between Lily and Marshall to heat up. I’ve already stressed that Lily’s sex drive is extremely uncomfortable to watch and, let me tell you, there was no stopping her this time. Turns out that all it takes to get Lily going is a leather wrist cuff that Carly sold to Ted in the store where she works. Next thing you know, Marshall slaps it on his wrist, Lily’s a fan and they can’t keep their hands off each other. Just when you think you can’t handle them anymore, Marshall’s allergic reaction to the leather cuff pumps the breaks on the action and spares the rest of us. Amen.
We are no closer to knowing who the mother could be; we might even be farther from where we started. Still, I’m glad Ted is finally putting himself out there and getting some time with the ladies. Maybe there will be a new girl next week, who knows? The writers are really starting to keep us on our toes here. Kudos.
Tune in Monday at 8 p.m. on CBS for Episode 15!
