Students scope out opportunities at annual internship fair

Boston College held its annual Internship fair on Jan. 23 and 24. Held in the Heights Room, 85 different companies were represented and spoke to students about interning with their companies.

According to Louis Gaglini, Associate Director in Career Center, 1121 students attended the internship fair.

“The whole process started in October, 2012.” Louis Gaglini said. “We started to invite companies to come to the fair. Some companies have good relations with Boston College and we also focus on bringing new faces to BC students.”

The internship fair resulted in mixed reactions from BC students. Donny Wang, CSOM’16, said that it was the first time he went to an internship fair and he wanted to get a head start with landing an internship. “There were so many opportunities in finance out there. This affirmed my decision to pursue a finance concentration,” he said.

Alice Zhang, A&S '15, is also interested in accounting and finance. She stopped by at the tables of Admiral Bank, Cigna and GE. “Companies and firms don’t usually take sophomores. However, I found that I do have chance in the finance departments of leadership organizations. I hope that the career center can teach students how to approach companies in terms of more resume and interview workshop,” Zhang said.

“Freshmen and sophomores are very welcome to go to the fair,” Gaglini said.  “Juniors usually have better a position in the fair because the companies want the students who can accept the offer in the coming year. To freshman and sophomore who came to the event, they were already in a good shape to find a job."

Gaglini said that asking the right questions to the employers is very important. “ The employers don’t want the students to ask them what they do. Students should do research before they go,” Gaglini said. “The Career Center will walk you through the whole process of resumes and interviews. Come and see us,” he said.
