The "Fiery Fifteen"

Think you have that iron stomach that can withstand whatever spices you take down? Test your ego by heading to El Pelon Taqueria every Wednesday night this month to see if you have the strongest stomach in all of Massachusetts. To enter the “Fiery Fifteen” food challenge you can go to El Pelon’s Brighton or Fenway location between 8 p.m. and 11 p.m. and sign the waiver requiring each contestant to pay fifteen dollars and consume fifteen habanera peppers within fifteen minutes with no additional food or water. There’s a catch, each contestant must keep the burning peppers in their stomachs, the physical consumption alone does not suffice. If this is done successfully, the contest will be awarded a free T-shirt and an automatic entrance into the final round on Wednesday, May 1.

If your stomach takes you all the way to the finale, prepare for an intense battle with the other semi-final winners. Here each challenger will compete head to head, habanera for habanera, to see who can consume and hold down the most habaneras at the final table. The challenge will start out slowly with each competitor eating one pepper every minute, beginning with jalapenos and Thai Chiles and ultimately advancing to habaneras. Just like in the semifinals no one is allowed any food or drink. However, if you nod to the judges you are allowed to drink as much horchata, the almond-flavored soft drink, as you can swallow.  The last man standing at the table will be crowned winner. In the past one winner managed to eat over 60 peppers! Think that’s too much? Here's some incentive, the winner receives free burritos for an entire year!
