Critics are skeptical of Apple’s newest update, iOS7

Apple has never ceased to present us with a dilemma – the option to either continue using our year-old devices, whether it is an iPhone, iPad, or MacBook, or to purchase their newest innovation. This is the case, yet again, as we are faced with the introduction of iOS7 in the fall. And while Apple higher-ups boast of a beautifully re-designed phone with more features than ever, some critics are skeptical that the iOS7 is a true victory for Apple, especially considering the new design is a central selling point of the new iPhone.

Apple’s Senior Vice President of Design, Jony Ive, explains that the design of the iOS7 is what “defines the experience.” The structure is entirely new and has been “applied across the entire system,” Apple’s press release quoted. The design team believes this system will demonstrate “harmonious relationship[s] between individual elements.” A big change will also be seen in the design of the icons, which have been both simplified and given new bursts of color. Overall, Apple’s Senior Vice President of Software Engineering Craig Federighi has labeled it as the operating system with “the most significant iOS update[s] since the original iPhone.”

These improvements, however, have not been universally well received. While many appear excited about the new features that the phone will have, both tech writers and designers have shown very negative reactions to the changes, The Huffington Post reports. As no one has had the chance to truly experience the iOS 7 quite yet, complaints have been very surface level and mostly center around design. Critics have suggested that the transition from the historically detailed and darker Apple designs, now thrown out the window, to more simplistic and colorful ones, is not necessarily a step in the right direction. And despite Apple’s attempts to improve the relationships between the various elements of the operating system, critics have also pointed out a lack of cohesion amongst the designs of each part of the system. They have attributed this to internal competition within the Apple marketing team, with different groups gunning for their own designs rather than leaving the design elements to the design team.

The Huffington Post predicts that the usual suspects behind the inventory sell-outs and the hour-long lines to buy the new Apple products, the “Apple fanboys,” will more than likely contribute to the success of the newest iOS7. Even with a design that many technology connoisseurs have criticized, the hordes of customers will inevitably turn up to their local Apple stores to purchase the newest technological masterpiece in the fall.
