“Deb became a mirror that you used to balance out the idea of yourself a monster. Now that mirror is cracked.”
I was already partial to the episode going in, because who doesn’t like a good RHCP song reference (however irrelevant), but regardless, it has successfully ramped up the pace of the season. As Dexter checks off guys from Vogel’s list of former patients that suspiciously includes a lot of serial killers, we come closer to finding the Brain Surgeon. In fact, we may have found him. But knowing Dexter, it’s definitely not that simple.
Deb goes into therapy (it doesn’t seem to be working)
Starting off a few weeks after the last episode ended, Vogel has started treating Deb with some confrontational therapy. Basically it consists of Vogel yelling at Deb that LaGuerta’s death was entirely her fault (true) and that Dexter is no good for her (true, but who doesn’t love a bad boy). Glad someone’s finally yelling at Deb. In a weird move, Deb has apparently moved into Vogel’s house, which I don’t really understand because we all know both of them are just competing to get into Dexter’s pants. Or kill him. Either way. Deb also pilfers through Vogel’s things to find recordings of her therapy sessions with Harry. Through this, she learns the root of Harry’s suicide: Dexter. As the rest of the episode plays out, you see that this is def a game changer.

Yates: Brain Surgeon? Foot fetishist? Both?
A.J. Yates, another one of Vogel’s former patients, becomes a glaringly obvious suspect when we see a scar along the back of his head that is identical to the cuts the Brain Surgeon has been making on his kills. SUSPICIOUS. His spidey senses tingling, Dexter breaks into Yates’ house to find…. [suspenseful pause] a collection of ladies footwear. One could think that maybe he just moonlights as a female entertainer, except for the fact that there are no pairs of shoes, just one of each. Serving as trophies perhaps… Or perhaps just a foot fetish along the lines of that boil-faced guy from There’s Something About Mary.

Dexter’s snooping is not so sly once we realize that Yates has mad security cameras in his house. Oops. However, he merely eavesdrops on Dexter’s phone call with Vogel then bounces. Perhaps off to the nearest DSW or Payless to continue his collection. Dexter continues his snooping to find the secret dungeon of death for young ladies à la Girl with The Dragon Tattoo.
In a move showing the never-ending complexity of Dexter, he saves a young woman Yates had stabbed and left for dead. He shows this act off the Vogel and takes her back to the dungeon.
While Vogel had been making great strides in gaining Dexters Luv&Affection, that all goes out the window when Dexter finds Vogel’s patients notes that Yates had stolen. Particularly the “Patient 0” aka Dexter. DEXTER IS NOT PLEASED.
Dexter is not pleased: Part 2
Having learned that she can place the blame of her father’s death on Dexter, Deb suddenly deviates from her seven-season-long persona of whiny drunk to all-out crazy. An innocent car ride along the lake (or reservoir, or sewer dump–it’s Miami, who knows) takes a sour turn when she decides to take hold of the wheel and send them both to their watery graves off a bridge.

Family fun day gone wrong? A random Good Samaritan saves Deb from drowning, and upon her being saved, she decides that maybe she doesn’t want to kill Dex after all. Preview for next week’s ep shows a very sassy Dexter. He is not pleased with Deb.

Miscellaneous thoughts

– There is so much randomness/so many unimportant subplots going on. Masuka meets a girl he thinks is hot who then turns out to be his daughter? That random woman always on the crime scene has a name (but I’ve forgotten it already…)? Quinn passes the sergeant exam? Cool.
– Speaking of Quinn. He’s dating Jamie but then awkwardly gets in a fight at her brother’s bar defending the honor of his ex, Deb (what honor…?). Poor form Quinny.
– Finally a hot girl enters the season to serve as a potential love interest for Dexter, conveniently meeting for the first time in his own apartment. She just popped in because she “needed some Tide.” That’s what they all say. Does this mean Hannah is going to return with a vengeance? We all know how the ladies can get when Dexter’s involved.
– We’re already a third of the way through the season?! I’m not mentally ready for this series to end.
