Dear Boston College Class of 2017,
Today is your day.
You’re off to Great Places!
You’re off and away!
You have brains in your head.
You have feet in your shoes.
You can steer yourself
Any direction you choose.
But, in the meantime,
You’re in the bubble of BC
So let the Torch guide you
As you meander towards a degree.
Oh, the places you’ll live
Whether Upper or Newton,
When sophomore housing comes around
Into eights you’ll be grouping.
Then it’s Lower or CoRo,
Off-campus or on,
Then maybe you’ll get a Mod
With a cute little lawn.
Oh, the places you’ll eat
Though the food gets repetitive
Another steak and cheese?
But it isn’t all negative.
Mac and Stuart get old,
The food may not agree with you.
But you can always order take-out
To try something new.
Oh, the buses you’ll miss
Heading to class or to bed
But if you download TransLoc
You’ll have less to dread.
The buses aren’t that bad,
You may even make friends
During a “Sweet Caroline” sing-along
When the last bus signals the night’s end.
Oh, the teams you’ll cheer on
In a gold sea of Superfans.
There’s no cell service in Alumni
So you better have a game plan.
The lyrics to “For Boston”
Can be difficult to master,
And chanting “Eagles on the warpath”
Will reveal your frosh-hood faster.
Oh, the city you’ll explore
Whether to sightsee or to dine
You can get there pretty quickly
Just never take the B-Line.
Oh, the parties you’ll crash In the Mods and off-campus
But don’t be those kids
Who drink too much and cause damage.
But, oh, the mistakes you’ll make
And trust me — you’ll make some.
Big or small, life goes on
And eventually you’ll shake them.
Oh, the videos you'll take
Of our beautiful Chestnut Hill home
And the memories you'll make
In the quad, the Mods and everywhere else you roam.
Oh, the clubs you’ll join
That will help find your place
Whether it’s art, music, sports or charity
There’s plenty to embrace.
Might I humbly suggest
If writing is your thing
That you try the Gavel on for size,
At least give it a spin?
Or maybe you're more of a businessperson
Photography? Video? Design?
Whatever you like, we like it too
So join us and help us shine.
