MFA After Dark: A Spooktacular Event

T’was the night before Halloween and you didn’t know where to go. Thirsty Thursday was in full swing but you got stuck with a 9AM Chinese class to start your Friday. What is the best thing to do while your friends are out till the break of dawn? Visit the MFA of course!

College Night: MFA After Dark took place on Thursday, October 30, from 7-9:45 pm. The museum was open for college students in New England and was free to students with a valid school ID. With nearly 450,000 works of art, it was not hard to find a new place to explore.

The line to get into the museum wrapped around the block, as students flocked from all over: Mass Art, Northeastern, MIT, Harvard and, of course, BC were all represented. Once inside, students had the freedom to roam the exhibits, enjoy the sounds of a local band, get spooky in the Halloween photo booth, or stay cool with some gelato (if you could bear to wait in the half-mile long line).

Ancient Works, Egyptian Mummies, and Jewelry are only a few of the highlights of the museum’s exhibits. The collections came from all over the world, from Asia to Europe to America. The museum hosts contemporary works, photographs, prints and drawings. Some of the featured collections included Goya: Order and Disorder and Gems and Jewelry from the Ancient Mediterranean. Every exhibit was open for exploration during the event.

The sounds of Grey Season flooded the museum. Their folky sound left all the attendees swaying to the music, whether they were admiring the art or waiting in the immensely long line to get free gelato. The local Boston boys were easily one of the highlights of the night. Their songs ranged from Halloween classics like “Monster Mash” to “Satellites,” off their most recent album Time Will Tell You Well.

The intimate performance allowed for a lot of interaction with the band. Their ground level stage made it easy for students to get up close and dance along to their catchy tunes. The dances in front of the band were almost as entertaining as the music itself.

The night came to a close around 9:45pm and the students all trickled out. The event allowed students from all over New England to come together and enjoy some pre-Halloween fun, although lack of students in costume was a little disappointing.

Overall, the event was a success. Keep it up, MFA. However, students don’t have to wait another year to explore what the museum has to offer, as admission is free to any BC student with their photo ID.

Additional photos from the night can be found on the Museum’s official Facebook page.
