Artist Profile: Coffeehouse Babe and Youtube Starlet Daniela Andrade

There are many reasons to thank YouTube: Marcel the Shell with shoes on, smoky eye make-up tutorials that are easier watched than done, approximately 27.5 million cat videos and finally, Daniela Andrade, a 22 year-old singer/songwriter from Alberta, Canada.

Andrade is most often recognized for her acoustic covers, although her originals do not go unnoticed. She attributes her success to YouTube, where she posted her first video in 2008; today she has over 55 million views and upwards of 43,000 followers on Spotify.  According to an interview with Star Central magazine Andrade began singing at the tender age of six, picked up her first guitar in 10th grade and the rest was history. “First song I learned by ear was Pink Floyd – Wish You Were Here, learned more songs by ear, eventually learned how to read chords and before I knew it I was starting to compose a few songs here and there,” she said.

Most of her songs are perfect for that rainy day when you and your roommate want to dally in the comfort of your cozy dorm room, perfectly lit by the Christmas lights that supposedly could set your whole dorm aflame in mere seconds...

Her voice is delicate yet powerful, and infused with emotion. Just as with John Mayer or Ingrid Michaelson, you expect all of her songs to be endearing love ballads, but then you come across this:

Andrade’s soft, intricate swagger is particularly present in her renditions of Radiohead’s “Creep,” Nirvana’s “Smells like Teen Spirit” and Michael Jackson’s “Billie Jean” . She shares her love for music not only with us, but also with her friends who she often collaborates with to produce various covers.  And who doesn’t like a great cover of Riptide:

There is much to be excited for from Andrade who has plans to release her first full-length album sometime this year.

Portland native with roots in Jersey. Lover of almonds, music and coffee shops. Desperately wants Stars Hallow to be a real place.
