BC Lacrosse Improves to 16-0, Defeats No. 14 Virginia Tech

No. 2 Boston College Women’s Lacrosse has been unstoppable this season, and today was no different. The No. 2 Eagles took down No. 14 Virginia Tech in a tight 9-7 game in Newton Saturday afternoon.

With the win, BC clinched the ACC Regular Season Title, moving to a perfect 16-0 on the season and 6-0 in conference play. This is also their 9th win against a ranked opponent this season.

BC dominated the first half of the game, getting to an early lead at 5-2. Per usual, junior Sam Apuzzo dominated face offs, often setting up the team on fast break opportunities. With a minute to go in the first half, junior Dempsey Arsenault ripped an inside pass to Apuzzo who shoveled in her 60th goal of the season.

In the second half, Virginia Tech made a strong push tying the game with 14:22 to go in the game. Relentlessly, the Hokies continued to bring the heat on what seemed like an unstoppable second half run; however, in response to the Hokies' fast paced, high energy play, BC began to slow down the pace of their possession. The majority of BC’s possessions in the second half were characterized by excellent passing and slow play, often running down the shot clock to under 10 seconds.

In fact, to get the lead back from the Hokies, the Eagles ran the shot clock to under 15 seconds on three straight possessions and had three excellent stops. With 12:26 to go, BC regained the lead after redshirt senior Tess Chandler nailed an inside pass to Apuzzo, who flipped it in for an 8-7 lead.

With less than a minute to go, senior Emma Schurr iced the game on a feed by Arsenault.

On offense, Apuzzo led the way for BC with 4 goals, followed by Kaileen Hart with 2 goals, and Chandler, Arsenault, and Schurr all added 1 goal a piece.

The Eagles have had a historic regular season, clinching the number 1 seed in the upcoming ACC Tournament. Following this win, No. 2 BC will take on No. 15 Syracuse at home on Thursday, April 19, as they look to continue their undefeated record through the final regular season game.
