EcoPledge and A Capella Groups Collaborate in Wildfire Relief Effort

Boston College's a cappella groups will sing for a cause this Tuesday night at a fundraiser for victims of wildfires in California.

The event, hosted by EcoPledge of BC, will feature singers from The Heightsmen, The Sharps, and The Common Tones.

“The goal of the fundraiser is to earn funds for relief efforts towards the disastrous effects of California’s most recent and most devastating wildfires that occurred in the fall of 2018,” said Ellen Kang, MCAS ‘20, EcoPledge’s head event coordinator.

In particular, EcoPledge hopes to educate the BC community about the degree of damage that the fires caused and the role that climate change played.

According to a 2016 report from the Environmental Protection Agency, southern California has warmed three degrees in the past century. The rising temperature has led to an increase in the risk of wildfires, a falling water supply, threats to coastal developments and ecosystems, and concerns about the impact on agriculture production and human health.

All proceeds from the fundraiser will be donated to the California Community Foundation’s Wildfire Relief Fund, which distributes donations to various short term and long term efforts. These include the rebuilding of homes, financial support for physical and mental health fees, assistance with case management services, and education about green rebuilding.

Tickets are on sale through the Robsham box office website for $7. The event will be held at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday in Devlin 008.
