Since the release of Maroon 5’s last single, “Girls Like You,” fans have been impatiently awaiting the drop of the group’s next hit. On Sept. 18, Maroon 5 followers got their wish: the band took to Twitter and posted the artwork and release date for their latest single, “Memories.” Quickly after its release on Sept. 20, Levine commented via Twitter, “This song is for anyone who has ever experienced loss. In other words, this song is for all of us.”
To fans’ surprise, “Memories” was a complete 180 from what they expected; while Maroon 5’s recent music has been very pop-oriented and upbeat, the song is slow and nostalgic with a simple melody. Despite its heavyhearted lyrics, the single remains optimistic and reflective. The chorus expresses this, declaring, “Here’s to the ones that we got / Cheers to the wish you were here, but you’re not / ‘Cause the drinks bring back all the memories / Of everything we’ve been through.”
Despite the disparity between what fans were expecting and the melancholy sound of “Memories,” the single is still receiving great praise from fans and critics, and is quickly rising on the top charts. Additionally, the reminiscent vibe of “Memories” bears resemblance to Maroon 5’s older songs, such as “Sunday Morning” and “She Will Be Loved.” These associations have caused many fans to speculate as to whether the group’s next album will be more similar to their older albums than their newer works.
As it turns out, Apple has its own connection to Maroon 5’s new single. The brand, whose iOS 13 includes a new photos app with a novel feature called Memories, teamed up with Maroon 5 to allow the Memories feature to play the song when creating a photo slideshow.
Maroon 5 also released a video on Apple Music, titled “Memories are Made,” that is getting a lot of attention; it features old pictures of the band throughout their 20 years together. Fans particularly love the photos of Levine, who looks almost unrecognizable with seemingly tattoo-less arms and hair almost down to his shoulders.
With the release of Maroon 5’s distinct and different new single, fans are left anticipating the upcoming album's release and wondering what kind of music will be featured on it.
