Men's Hockey Dominant in Weekend Sweep of UMass Lowell

The No. 1 hockey team in the country solidified its ranking this week, with a home-and-home sweep against UMass Lowell.

On Friday night, the Eagles dispatched the River Hawks 7-1. The sophomore class accounted for six goals and six assists. Last year’s Hockey East Rookie of the Year, Alex Newhook, grabbed his first two goals of the season and an assist. Matt Boldy scored a goal and added four assists for his first career five-point game for the Eagles.

Drew Helleson opened the scoring for the Eagles three minutes into the game, but the River Hawks responded less than a minute later to tie the game early in the first period. The Eagles scored 6 unanswered goals over the rest of the game, and Spencer Knight posted 29 saves on 30 shots to handle business.

Saturday night’s contest was a completely different story, as the Eagles found themselves down 2-0 at the end of the first period.

Over the course of 1:17 in the second period on a 4-on-4 situation, Mike Hardman and Drew Helleson notched goals to even the score at 2-2.

The Eagles controlled the tempo throughout the second period and were dominant in the third period. Goals from Nikita Nesterenko and Jack McBain in the third frame solidified a four-goal swing and showed the squad’s true strength and character.

The River Hawks couldn’t pull their goalie until there was less than a minute left in the game, and they scored a goal right as the buzzer rang for the end of the game to make the final score 4-3.

Spencer Knight secured 29 saves and recorded his 12th win between the pipes for the Eagles.

Boston College improves to 8-1-1 in their last ten games, and 13-3-1 overall on the season.

The Hockey East announced the postseason tournament details early last week. All 11 teams in the conference will make the tournament, and they will be seeded according to a newly-developed Hockey East power index. The tournament will commence on March 10th, with regular season play ending on March 7th.
