This upcoming week, Boston College’s GLBTQ+ Leadership Council (GLC) will be holding Pride Week to coincide with National Coming Out Day, October 11, and LGBT history month. The week is filled with events throughout campus that will bring together students of all kinds in celebration of Pride.
GLC’s main focus is to “provide a space and advocate for GLBTQ+ rights and inclusion on campus,” while ensuring that “GLBTQ+ students voices, beliefs, and concerns are being accurately represented and amplified through GLC.” By holding events throughout the year such as Pride Week, GLC wishes to create a community where students can feel safe, loved, and accepted.
Pride Week will kick off on Tuesday, October 11 with a brunch on O’Neill Plaza open to all. From 9:30-11:30, students can stop by for a quick bite or just a friendly conversation. On Wednesday, GLC will move to the academic quad as they feature mental health resources and tabling from 10:30-1:30. At the same time and place on Thursday, they will be giving away Pride Pins to all who wish to support the GLBTQ+ community at BC and beyond. That same night, GLC will hold its Lambda Dinner at 7 P.M., featuring free food and fun conversation in Stokes S111.
Kicking off the weekend’s events, GLC will hold a crafting day in Vanderslice Hall’s Cabaret Room from 3-6. Saturday will include a GLC spin class at 10 A.M. in the Plex, and the week will conclude with an event in the Schiller Institute’s Makerspace on Sunday at 10 A.M.
Pride Week is bound to be an eventful one, as GLC has packed the week with a little something for everyone. Wells Arkins, the chair of GLC, talked about the potential of Pride Week here at BC: “I hope that people will gain many things! I hope that Pride Week serves as an opportunity for queer people to feel celebrated on campus. I hope that it encourages allies to come out and show their support. Most importantly, I hope that Boston College knows that we are here, we are queer, and we are here to stay.”
