Seniors' Last Firsts

The Gavel's Diatribe acts as the satirical medium for short rants over topics ranging from complete triviality to utmost importance.

It’s the start of a new school year so you know what that means: it's the last first time seniors can say it’s their last first day of classes (even though that’s realistically second semester). All of us seniors are beginning to reminisce on our time on The Heights and reflect on what is really important to us for our last firsts. It’s our last first time to get nostalgic over all the fun, memories, and friendships we’ve made over the past three years. And I’m sure your Instagram feeds have been keeping you up to date with all the seniors' last firsts that you haven’t seen 50 times over. The underclassmen must just love hearing about all of our first lasts.

Don’t forget it’s our last first game day! AKA last first time getting drunk at 8 a.m. in the Mods. Or scrambling to put together the last first perfect, never been done before game day fit, which leads to the first last strategically thought out and edited Instagram game day post. Or last first time being atrociously disappointed by BC football’s performance, or if you’re lucky enough, you missed it all and it was your last first time at Circle on game day.

I would be remiss if I failed to bring up the lively social life of Boston College. Labor Day really brought out the best with the last first bender of the school year. The last firsts were plentiful, like our last first Thursday night at TITS or Lansdowne (pick your poison), last first game day eve at Cisco, and the iconic last first senior kickoff at—drum roll please—TITS! You also probably had your last first green tea shot, and maybe (just maybe) that should really just be your last last green tea shot. Or maybe somewhere in between these riveting last firsts at all of our favorite bars you got your last first totally unexpected, expected 2 a.m. text and had your last first (or you swear it's just the last last) hookup with your junior year situationship. And that would lead to your last first walk of shame through the Mods for all to see in the *too* bright daylight. Or you had a rude awakening in your twin XL bed to your last first hangover. But of course, then the roomies would convene in the common room for the first last debrief we’ve been waiting for all summer.

But on a more sentimental note, it’s our last first sleepover with our best friends in our lovely BC dorms, our last first sleep before game day where we are anticipating a day of tailgating and reuniting with friends who we haven’t seen in a summer or a semester for our abroad returnees, our last first wine night, our last first crying laughing fit in the common room, and the last first time you look around and see how far you and your friends have come from COVID college freshman year. Oh, how the times have changed…

Whatever your last first is, I’m sure it’s just as memorable as all the rest…well at least the ones we’re sober for…
