In a tight-knit competition, the BC Women’s Soccer team lost to Virginia Tech 2-1 on Thursday night. Despite the Eagles’ valiant efforts on the defensive front, the team struggled to match the Hokies’s aggressive attack.
The Eagles started in their usual 4-3-3, ready to protect the box at all costs. Both teams were loud before the whistle, excited for an evening of competition. Virginia Tech used this energy to their advantage, immediately asserting themselves in the offensive zone. They pushed the ball quickly to the Eagles’ penalty area. Five minutes into the game, Hokie’s attacker Natalie Mitchell capitalized on a cross pass that slipped past BC’s defense, putting Virginia Tech on the board first with a 1-0 lead.
Despite the defensive slip-up, the Eagles’ midfield quickly gained momentum. Freshman midfielder Belle Douglas tenaciously halted the Hokies in their tracks, helping turn the tide in the Eagles’ favor.
In the 13th minute, the Hokies’ goaltender passed a ball right into the grasp of Eagles’ attacker Aislin Streicek. Streicek promptly passed the ball to Ella Richards, who put one in the net to tie the game at 1-1. Ella Richards remains the team’s leading scorer, adding her fourth on the season. Richards’s goal boosted morale across the stadium, creating a new, competitive atmosphere for both teams.
After Richards’s game-tying shot, the Eagles showcased their defensive might. Elle Douglas drew a crucial yellow card in the 25th minute, adding to an already impressive performance. Defender Claire Mensi had a terrific match in the backfield, not letting anyone near goalkeeper Wiebke Willebrandt. Both teams battled in the midfield until the end of the first half.
Willebrandt began the second half with a highlight save in the 55th minute, leaping to deflect a ball off the top post. Willebrandt saved three shots on the night, continuing an impressive junior campaign.
The Eagles struggled to take advantage of the Hokies’ mistakes. The Hokies continuously missed the offsides flag, drawing whistle after whistle throughout the second half. However, in the seventy-first minute, the Hokies stayed onside as Mitchell tallied her second goal of the night on a breakaway, 2-1 Hokies.
Despite the Eagles’ midfield efforts, the team struggled to produce proper scoring opportunities. Senior midfielder Sonia Walk played well in the second half, holding the Hokies back in their zone. The Eagles seemed to slow down in the last forty-five minutes of the match, tired from an explosive first half. Soon enough, the eighty-eighth minute came, and the Hokies had a one-goal lead over the Eagles. Despite a valiant push to the buzzer, the Eagles failed to match the score.
The Eagles suffered their fifth loss of the year (2–5–3, 0–2–0 ACC). The team hopes to redeem themselves this Sunday afternoon against Clemson, another formidable, in-conference opponent.
