Diatribe: Please Put a Coat On

Emma Cunningham / Gavel Media

Although there is no shortage of Superpuff or Canada Goose jackets on this campus, there does seem to be a shortage of people wearing them. As I walk from class to class, I am constantly surprised at the number of students who aren’t wearing coats. Given the fact that snow has been on the ground since we got back from winter break and temperatures have reached the single digits, coats should be a must, right?

I can’t help but wonder why these brave souls choose not to wear jackets at the coldest time of year. Without any parents around to pester and shame us into putting a coat on, there’s no reason that people shouldn’t be wearing winter coats to make a statement to their moms. Maybe some people peaked in middle school and want to return to their twelve-year-old persona. I can picture myself now, rushing out the door in my Uggs and Vineyard Vines shirt, hoping to escape my mom before she forced me to put a jacket on. Who wouldn’t want to relive the glory days of sixth grade?

Maybe students are using their newfound freedom to test out some new fashion statements. Jackets ruin outfits, I guess. Apparently the new look is rosy cheeks, hunched shoulders, and hands shoved in pockets. I love how your chattering teeth perfectly complement your new hoodie! And don’t get me started on the no-jacket and shorts combo. You’re so ahead of the trends I haven’t even seen it on Tiktok yet. Your style is just to die for! If you aren’t wearing a jacket in this weather, you look super cold. I mean…cool!

Another possibility for the lack of coats could be everyone’s wish to get sick. I mean, who doesn’t love getting sick at college? Keeping my roommates up with my coughing, being three weeks behind on work, and being unable to leave my Welch quad have been some of the highlights of my semester. I can understand why people choose not to wear coats, it’s so they can get sick faster! Come on, coughing and blowing your nose in Bapst is on everyone’s Boston College bucket list.

It seems like there are countless good reasons not to wear a coat in below-freezing weather. It seems like I’m going to have to try out the no-coat-chic look for myself. Who knows, maybe once the weather gets into the single digits I’ll even try wearing shorts!
