Our No. 1 Boston College Eagles Lacrosse opened their season against the No. 10 Loyola Greyhounds Friday afternoon. Prior to the game, the team’s 2024 championship banner was unveiled, commemorating their championship win against Northwestern last season.  With that, the Eagles became one of eight schools to win multiple lacrosse championships.

The Eagles wasted no time getting on the board, with two preseason first-team All-Americans playing a key role—Rachel Clark scored off an assist from Emma LoPinto. From there, the Eagle’s continuous defensive pressure led to several sloppy mistakes on the side of Loyola and, with 3:22 remaining in the first period, Loyola finally scored their 1st goal, concluding the period with a score of 5-1 in favor of the Eagles.

After Loyola opened the scoring in the second period to make it 6-2, Clark and LoPinto dominated being involved in all 7 goals scored by the Eagles during the second period, including 3 resulting from free position shots. Prior to the Eagles’ 12th goal, a Green card was called on BC Lydia Colasante, but Loyola could not take advantage. As the period was winding down, Loyola attempted a free-position shot which was then saved by Eagles’ goalkeeper and third-team preseason all-American Shea Dolce. Subsequently, a foul was called on Dolce but the free position attempt by Loyola’s Ava Kane clanked off the post, ending the period with a 12-2 lead in favor of the Eagles.

Despite the monumental lead held by the Eagles, Loyola came out roaring at the beginning of the third period. Freshman Mim Suares-Jurey scored in the opening 20 seconds as fellow Australian and senior Georgia Latch poured on another a minute later for Loyola. After the Eagles scored again from a free-position shot, Loyola responded less than a minute later with a goal, making it 13-5. From here, it was all Eagles the rest of the period as freshman Devon Russell scored her first career goal with Molly Driscoll and Kylee Colbert adding on with a goal of their own.

The 4th period began with an impressive save by goalkeeper Shea Dolce as she continued to boast her defensive prowess. The first goal of the period was scored by Loyola which was then followed by a barrage of goals by the Eagles, as Clark scored twice more with Brooke McLoy adding one as well. Loyola’s final goal of the game was scored by Anna Kaplan to make the score 18-7. The Eagles added three more goals to seal the game, including one from freshman Giulia Colarusso, who scored the very first goal of her career.

The Eagles capped off their season opener with a commanding 21-7 victory, carrying the momentum from their championship win in the previous season.
