Trump’s Crusade Against Trans Rights and the Weaponization of Fear

It was no secret that Donald Trump would be radical in many ways on anti-trans rights legislation, as he made it clear throughout his entire 2024 campaign that he would be implementing executive orders to remove protections and rights for trans Americans. The sheer speed and severity of his executive actions in his first month in office, however, reveal a full-scale attack on trans rights beyond what anyone could have predicted. His administration’s immediate and aggressive push to erase transgender identities from federal recognition and restrict access to essential healthcare is not only cruel, but a deliberate nod to Project 2025, despite his claims that he is not involved in the far-right agenda. These policies are a calculated effort to dehumanize trans people and strip away the incremental progress that has been made toward equality.

Trump wasted no time making his stance on trans rights clear. In his inaugural address, he declared, “As of today, it will henceforth be the official policy of the United States government that there are only two genders: male and female.” This statement set the tone for his presidency, politicizing gender identity at the highest level of government. Just hours later, he signed his first executive order on the matter, mandating that the federal government recognize only two genders– erasing legal protections and recognition for transgender and nonbinary individuals.

The terminology behind this act, titled “Defending Women from Gender Ideology Extremism and Restoring Biological Truth to the Federal Government,” is a blatant attack on trans people, built on fearmongering and deceit. The very premise that cisgender women need to be “defended” from trans women is an offensive fabrication, reinforcing the untrue and dangerous narrative that trans women are a threat, and that women, in general, are weak and need protection. This act weaponizes the language of “biological truth” to justify discrimination, ignoring the realities of living as a trans individual. By calling basic rights for trans people “extremism,” this law actively fuels the far-right’s barrage against trans rights, stripping trans people of their dignity and legal protections in a clear and deliberate effort to erase them from public life.

Beyond legal recognition, Trump has already taken measures to block access to gender-affirming healthcare. One of his recent executive orders bans federal funding for gender-affirming medical care for individuals under 19. It instructs the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services to review existing literature on gender dysphoria within 90 days—an effort widely seen as an attempt to cast doubt on the overwhelming medical consensus that gender-affirming care is necessary. Additionally, the order proposes withdrawing federal funding from medical schools and hospitals engaged in research on transgender healthcare. This decision flies in the face of expert consensus from the American Medical Association, which recognizes gender-affirming care as essential and, in many cases, lifesaving.

The assault on trans rights has not stopped at healthcare. Trump’s administration has also imposed restrictions on gender markers in passports, preventing transgender and nonbinary individuals from obtaining documentation that accurately reflects their identity. By eliminating nonbinary gender markers and requiring applicants to conform to their sex assigned at birth, the administration has created ridiculous barriers that make travel more difficult and expose trans people to potential harassment and discrimination. Enforcing documentation rules such as this disregards the identity of trans individuals and puts them at risk in a world where accurate identification is necessary for safety and recognition.

These policies are not just discriminatory, they are dehumanizing. They strip trans people of their dignity, ignore medical research, and seek to erase an entire community from public life. Trans people will not disappear simply because the government refuses to acknowledge their existence. Throughout history, transgender individuals have persevered despite government attempts to erase them, and they will continue to do so. The Trump administration’s actions are an outrageous regression and a horrifying glimpse into what is to come for the future of trans rights.
