Whew! That was a close one. After a sustained attack by the Bentley Falcons, Boston College overcame a game of frustrating near-misses to move onto the Regional Championship Sunday night.
Sophomore sensations Ryan Leonard and Gabe Perreault broke open the scoring with three minutes left in the first period. It was a breakthrough after a period of consistent pressure against the Falcons.
In the second period, BC struggled as Bentley provided a counterpunch. Graduate Captain Ethan Leyh evened up the score for Bentley just three minutes into the second period. Bentley kept the pressure coming, only to be met by an outstanding performance from sophomore goaltender Jacob Fowler.
Freshman James Hagens scored the game-winning goal with 1:17 left in regulation, breaking a 1-1 tie. After a thrilling flurry of plays from the Eagles’ star-studded first line, they finally broke through to take the lead. Later, Ryan Leonard scored an empty-net goal, sealing the game. The game ended 3-1, a relieving finish for the Eagles, who outshot Bentley 44-21.
BC now turns its eyes toward a National Championship rematch against the Denver Pioneers. It should be a tough game against Hobey Baker finalists Zeev Biuim and Jack Devine. Denver defeated the Providence Friars in the later game 5-1.
