In the aftermath of Trump’s election and the Republican Party’s consolidation of power in the House and Senate, the progressive wing of the Democratic Party faces a very pivotal moment. It is easy to get disconnected from politics when your party is not in power, especially with the anxiety-inducing antics of the Trump administration. The “Fighting Oligarchy” Tour, led by Senator Bernie Sanders and Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (AOC), is proving to be crucial to engaging leftists and maintaining political engagement at a time when grassroots activism is absolutely essential.
Across the country, tens of thousands of people are rallying in record numbers. They are packed into these venues not to hear familiar watered-down centrist talking points of the Democratic Party, but to hear the flaws of American capitalism that Sanders and AOC are best known for discussing. People show up in droves to hear the critiques that Sanders and AOC throw not only towards Republicans but also towards the failures of the Democratic Party. The LA rally alone drew a jaw-dropping 36,000 attendees, proving that even amid political setbacks, energy on the left is alive and growing.
The Democratic Party is currently in a crisis of direction. After the 2024 election, a Gallup poll indicated that 45% of Democrats favored a shift towards moderation, showing how a significant portion of the party is pushing for a centrist approach. But the Sanders-AOC tour pushes back against that instinct, insisting that the real threat isn’t the “radical left”—it’s the oligarchs who write the rules and rig the system. The tour is a masterclass in how to frame the stakes to redirect the Democratic Party’s stance, which should not be Red vs. Blue, but The People vs. The Powerful.
This tour, besides rallying progressives behind their causes, is also about reminding people that politics don’t end at the ballot box. Activism, mutual aid, protests, and grassroots campaigns matter, especially when institutional power is out of reach. As Sanders said on the tour: “Despair is not an option. Giving up and hiding under the covers is not acceptable. The stakes are just too high.” This message hits even harder in conservative and swing states, where the tour has been drawing unexpected crowds. In places like Missoula, Montana, where thousands gathered to hear Sanders and AOC, the excitement was palpable. It’s proof that the appetite for economic justice isn’t limited to coastal cities or reliably blue districts. People are hungry for something real and are tired of the Democratic moderate talking points that are not helping them.
And yet, turning this energy into structural change is still the mountain to climb. California’s struggles with passing progressive policy, despite deep blue support, represent how deep lobbied interests still are and how difficult progressive policy can be to pass. This is the whole point of the tour: to remind the American people that the fight is far from over, and it can’t be won by elected officials alone. The “Fighting Oligarchy” Tour is a call to keep fighting and a refusal to give up, even when it feels like the system is stacked against the people. Hope, when paired with organizing and an unapologetic vision, can still be a political force. While Congress might be lost for now, the movement is not.
