Unexpected tensions between Elon Musk and President Donald Trump boiled over last week as Musk publicly incited arguments between the two parties. The world was watching as Musk hastily took his grievances with the president to social media. This comes after announcements from the Trump administration regarding Musk’s departure from the White House and his shocking discontent for Republicans’ “big, beautiful bill,” which has divided Congress in recent weeks.
On June 3, Musk initiated the publicity of the tensions when he posted to X, “Im sorry, but I just can’t stand it anymore. This massive, outrageous, pork-filled Congressional spending bill is a disgusting abomination. Shame on those who voted for it: you know you did wrong. You know it.”
Musk then asserted that the bill would reverse the changes the DOGE department implemented during Trump’s first months. The agency was established by Trump to eliminate government spending, and Musk was appointed as the leader. Nonetheless, he announced he had departed from the position on May 28.
The first several exchanges of posts highlighted Musk’s disdain for the new budget bill, and he called out Republicans, including Trump, for voting against their established beliefs. In one post, Musk reposted one of Trump’s remarks from 2013, calling Republicans who raise the debt ceiling embarrassing. Ironically, the big beautiful bill would raise the debt ceiling by $4 trillion.
The main motive behind Musk’s anger, however, stems from the elimination of EV mandates that provided tax cuts for electric vehicles. The mandates brought Musk’s company Tesla millions of dollars annually, and they were a major focus of Musk’s social media spree.
After calling out Republicans for skewing their beliefs, slamming Trump’s personal hypocrisy, and claiming that he never saw the bill before it reached Congress, Musk transitioned to revealing harsh assertions against Trump’s personal life and character. Musk made a wide range of accusations, from election fraud to engagements with Jeffrey Epstein.
“Without me, Trump would’ve lost the election, Dems would control the house, and Republicans would be 51-49 in the senate,” Musk posted on June 5, followed by, “such ingratitude.”
Musk’s accusations shocked the nation, as he alluded to an illegitimate election and, thus, the erosion of democracy. Furthermore, similar accusations against the Biden administration heavily influenced the 2021 Capitol insurrection and tarnished the legitimacy of the previous administration, especially amongst far-right leaning individuals. Although Musk did not elaborate more on the statement, many are hoping the accusations lead to an official investigation.
Trump responded on his social media platform, Truth Social, saying, “Elon was ‘wearing thin,’ and I asked him to leave. I took away his EV Mandate that forced everyone to buy electric cars that nobody wanted (that he knew for months I was going to do!), and he just went CRAZY!”
Musk shot back with another jolting accusation, posting that the reason the Epstein files have not been released is because Trump is a figure in the files. He even shared a video of the pair at a party together in the 90s. Although there have been speculations regarding Epstein and Trump’s relationship in the past, the post solidifies the shady manner regarding the documents’ classification. However, the posts regarding Epstein have since been deleted.
Trump did not directly address these accusations, but he stated in calls with media stations that Musk has “lost his mind” and further insisted that Musk is crazy. Press secretary Karoline Leavitt called the claims and posts an ‘“unfortunate episode.” On a podcast with Theo Von, Vice President JD Vance said the Epstein accusations were false, and Musk had made a huge mistake.
The president’s final post to Musk stated, “I don’t mind Elon turning against me, but he should have done so months ago. This is one of the Greatest Bills ever presented to Congress. It’s a Record Cut in Expenses, $1.6 Trillion Dollars, and the Biggest Tax Cut ever given. If this Bill doesn’t pass, there will be a 68% Tax Increase, and things far worse than that. I didn’t create this mess, I’m just here to FIX IT. This puts our Country on a Path of Greatness. MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN.”
Following the feud, social media erupted, with individuals from all sides weighing in. Some turned the situation into a meme, portraying the ordeal as a celebrity relationship break up. One of the mothers of Musk’s children, Ashley St. Clair, posted, “Hey @realdonaldtrump lmk if u need break up advice.”
Others posted polls regarding whose side the rest of the nation was on, and many individuals got to work exploring the election fraud and Epstein files accusations.
For Musk, the exchange has taken a toll on Tesla, with market shares dropping by 14% on June 5 alone. Trump’s administration will continue to push the elimination of tax credits on electric vehicles, and Tesla revenue is expected to continue to decrease. In retaliation, Musk threatened to dismantle the SpaceX Dragon Spacecraft, which brings astronauts to the International Space Station, but he rescinded those claims.
Although exchanges between Musk and Trump have halted for several days, the conflict illuminates the arguments between politicians and civilians alike. The ‘big beautiful bill’ is a source of contention for all Americans, and the Musk and Trump tensions have exemplified the different viewpoints and sides. As for the Trump administration, there appears to be few regrets behind letting Musk go from Doge, and Trump is implying that the pair do not need to work together anymore.
In an interview on June 9, Trump was asked if he was planning on speaking with Musk soon. Trump replied, “I haven’t really thought about it, actually. I would imagine he wants to speak to me. I would think that. If I were him I would want to speak to me.”
