With almost a third of the NFL season behind us, it seems a fitting time to evaluate some of the league’s rookies. The transition from college football to the pros is never easy: adapting to new systems, faster competition, and high expectations can make or break a young rookie’s first season. Some have burst onto the scene, defying the learning curve and making their mark early, while others have struggled to find their footing. In this article, I’ll evaluate some of the notable offensive rookies this NFL season.
Starting off our list hot is a part one of a rookie duo bringing life back to the Big Apple, New York Giants quarterback Jaxson Dart. Dart was drafted late in the first round after the Giants traded with the Los Angeles Rams, building upon their initial first round pick, linebacker Abdul Carter. The move, in which the Giants ceded their second and third round pick, sparked some criticism, yet Dart’s early performance has certainly pleased fans. Taking over for veteran Russell Wilson in week four, Dart led the winless Giants to an underdog victory over the undefeated Los Angeles Chargers, followed up by an even bigger upset over the reigning champion Philadelphia Eagles in week six. Despite week five and seven losses to the New Orleans Saints and Denver Broncos, respectively, Dart has brought hope to a fanbase that’s been begging for a franchise quarterback. Veteran-like playmaking ability, paired with impressive athleticism and resilience in the face of obstacles, has allowed Dart to find success and assume a natural leadership role on the team.
The Giants’ youthful spark is not merely due to Dart, but also fellow rookie running back Cam Skattebo. The former Arizona State Sun Devil was drafted in the fourth round and has already far exceeded expectations. In six games—four of which he started—Skattebo has accumulated over 400 scrimmage yards and five touchdowns good for seventh and fourth in the NFL, respectively. His playstyle can only be described as physical, as the rookie seems unafraid of contact. His ability to run through contact is seriously impressive, requiring multiple hits per run to take him down. Dart and Skattebo’s dynamic energy, exhibited in their signature headbutt, has instilled excitement in fans who previously had little to cheer for.
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ offense seemed depleted with receivers Mike Evans, Chris Godwin, and Jalen McMillan all missing time, but rookie Emeka Egbuka has certainly filled that void. The Ohio State product has seamlessly filled the WR1 role, leading the team in almost every offensive stat, from yards, with 527, to touchdowns, with five. Egbuka’s breakout stardom has been a large part of the Buccaneers 5-2 start, placing them atop the NFC South.
One of the biggest surprises of the season has been the success of the Indianapolis Colts, led by the once-disgraced quarterback Daniel Jones. Part of this renaissance is due to the play of first-round pick Tyler Warren, the tight end from Penn State. Warren is averaging over 60 yards per game, leading the league’s tight ends. His versatility and ability to play out of a traditional tight end alignment as well as in the slot, out wide, and in the backfield has confused opposing defenses, making Warren a valuable piece for the breakout Colts.
Rounding out our breakout rookie stars is New England Patriots offensive tackle Will Campbell, the fourth overall pick who went viral in his post draft interview for claiming he would “fight and die for” quarterback Drake Maye. The left tackle has found success protecting Maye’s blind side, allowing only 2 sacks thus far. In their week seven victory over the Titans, the rookie achieved an impressive 95.8% pass block efficiency. Run blocking is an area of needed improvement for the young tackle, but his raw athleticism and high football IQ are that of a future Pro Bowler.
As the season unfolds, these rookies have not only adapted to the demands of the NFL, but excelled, leading their squads to impressive starts. If their early performances are any indication of future success, the league is in good hands for years to come.
