Boston College women’s hockey put on a show in Conte Forum during their home opener against the Holy Cross Crusaders. The team secured a 4-2 victory over their Hockey East opponents, giving Eagles fans a team to be proud of.
Senior forward Kate Ham lit up the scoreboard early with a goal just three minutes into the first period, securing a lead for the Eagles after the Crusaders failed to capitalize on an early power play. Midway through the first period, the Eagles did not let a power play pass them by. Freshman defender Madelyn Murphy scored her first career goal to extend the lead, putting a second goal on the board.
Holy Cross evened out the score just before the end of the first period after two back-to-back saves from senior goaltender Grace Campbell. Campbell never failed to make the Crusaders fight for their space in the defensive zone, saving seven shots in the first period and 40 in total during the game.
The second period started off with immense pressure from the Crusaders on BC’s net. Holy Cross fired on Campbell to no avail as the senior flawlessly saved the onslaught of attempts. Murphy sent the puck up to fellow freshman and forward Ava Thomas, breaking the Crusader’s momentum. After assisting the first two goals of the game, it was Thomas’s time to shine and she scored the Eagles’ third goal, restoring their two-point lead with a skillful play around the keeper.
Both teams held strong for the next 23 minutes, until Holy Cross was able to make it past Campbell following a barrage of shots for their second goal with just six minutes left in the game.
Refusing to let the game end with a one-goal lead, BC ramped up their aggression and shut out the next 20 shots from the Crusaders. In the final minute of the game, after Holy Cross pulled their goalkeeper, freshman forward Maxim Tremblay capitalized on the empty net to score one last time for the Eagles, bringing the final score to 4-2.
