The No. 9 Boston College men’s hockey team saw its three-game unbeaten run come to an end Friday night, falling 7-3 to No. 7 Denver at Conte Forum in a game that got away from the Eagles in the middle frame.
BC drops to 2-2-1 on the young season after what has been a challenging early schedule featuring several ranked opponents. The loss to Denver marks yet another setback against the Pioneers, who have now defeated the Eagles four times in the past three seasons.
The Eagles started strong on home ice, with senior Andre Gasseau opening the scoring midway through the first period on a slick transition play. After Denver responded with two quick goals, BC’s third line answered back, as Jake Sondreal ripped home a one-timer with assists from Will Vote and Bruins’ first-round draft pick Dean Letourneau to send the teams into the first intermission tied 2-2.
However, the second period proved costly for Boston College. The Eagles struggled to contain Denver’s attack, surrendering three goals in the frame while managing just one response. Defensive zone turnovers and breakdowns in transition led to numerous odd-man rushes for the Pioneers, who pounced on BC’s mistakes.
James Hagens showed his offensive prowess late in the second period, cutting the deficit to 5-3 with his third goal in two games. The tally gave BC a glimmer of hope heading into the final period, but Denver added two more in the third, including an empty-netter, to seal the victory by making it 7-3 DU.
Andre Gasseau, Jake Sondreal, and James Hagens each found the back of the net for the Eagles, while Aram Minnetian picked up his first point of the season.
Head coach Greg Brown and the Eagles will look to regroup as they open Hockey East play next week with a home-and-home series against Northeastern (3-1-0) beginning Thursday.
