The Gavel’s Guide to Local Farmers Markets

Alisa Fixler

Eating locally sourced fruits and vegetables as a college student is difficult. However, as soon as you bite into the crispiest apple from a farm down the road, the fresh loaf of apple-cinnamon sourdough from a local baker, or a bunch of dark green kale picked earlier that morning, you realize that finding local foods is worth the effort. Local food doesn’t just taste better –it connects you to your community, supporting a more just food system where local growers and farmers can thrive, family-owned businesses can prosper, and different cultures can use the diverse space to sell traditional cuisine. Eating locally reminds us that every purchase has power. Use your money to support sustainability, equity, and community.
