APPLICATIONS FOR SPRING OF 2023
Applications to join The Gavel are now live. Read through the various options below and fill out the corresponding application.
Features is a section that highlights unique perspectives and voices through personal interviews, narratives, and investigations. In Features, you can write about anything: Love Island, current events, and even BC Dining are all fair game to investigate. Pieces tend to be a bit longer than News so Features can tell a story that's generally is more in depth.
The Opinions section gives a unique perspective on events/moments on campus and in the surrounding area. This section is a way to express thoughts and opinions through a liberal lens in a serious light or with a humorous twist in a diatribe.
In the culture section, writers focus on two main subject areas within their articles. They primarily consider the arts and entertainment, which includes events both at Boston College and in the world in general. There is a lot of creative freedom in this regard, as writers can highlight any form of media that interests them, such as music, film, dance, etc. (the possibilities are endless!). The culture section also centers on politics and activism that occur both on and off campus. Writers will often find a way to combine pop culture with politics, providing a unique perspective on these social issues.
As a member of the sports section, you will have the opportunity to cover your favorite sports both at BC and in the greater Boston area. In addition, we focus on national and international sports coverage that does not receive the attention it deserves.
The News section covers breaking, developing, and long-term stories from around BC's campus and the Boston area. Writers typically attend on- and off-campus events and objectively report in a short, succinct manner. The section aspires to cover events, protests, and people from undercover and under-appreciated corners of the community.
Creative Team's job is to enhance articles with compelling, good-looking photos and graphics that further the progressive messages of the publication. With workshops on photography and graphic design, as well as exclusive media access to sports games and other events, The Gavel's Creative Team provides its members with an abundance of opportunity to learn about and be enriched in creative media.
The Copy Team is responsible for making the final round of edits and publishing all articles for The Gavel. It’s a great way to be involved in the posting process and fine-tune your editing and proofreading skills.
The Print Staff works with the writing staff and creative team to produce a magazine that is distributed to the student body each semester. This section provides the opportunity to collaborate with and learn about all aspects of The Gavel.
Behind the Bench: The Gavel Podcast
We are looking to turn “Behind the Bench” into The Gavel’s advice and lifestyle column this coming semester, which would include Q&As, advice sessions, cool guest interviews, and chatter about campus events.
The Business Team is responsible for the behind-the-scenes operations of The Gavel. The Business Team is an opportunity to get hands-on experience in website maintenance, social media marketing, fundraising, event-planning, and budgeting.
