Could Glee be making a reemergence in television? The show focused on a group of teenagers who all felt different in some ways yet found comfort in music. Every episode helped people feel less alone by focusing on real-world problems, such as bullying, discrimination, and identity. Because of this, it resonated with teenagers during the 2010s, who found an outlet where they could be understood and seen.
The show was created by Ryan Murphy, also known for producing the television hits American Horror Story, Scream Queens, and Monster. He created Glee to showcase choir and musical theatre on mainstream television, intending for the show to be an outlet specifically for high schoolers who felt like outsiders among their peers. His simple concept became a cult classic, allowing it to run for six seasons.
On Sept. 23, Murphy revealed there is potential for a Glee reboot. He finished writing a script alongside his fellow producers Brad Falchuk and Ian Brennan. The content that he is proposing has not been disclosed because Murphy wants to see what possible cast members and directors think. He has shared that roughly 10 cast members were enthusiastic and optimistic about the concept.
While this idea may seem appealing on paper, there’s a lot of discussion that this will be bad in reality. Since the show ended, Murphy has reportedly had strained relationships with some former cast members.
Many actors and crew complained about the working conditions on set, including long workdays and demanding schedules. Amber Riley, who played Mercedes Jones, has made it clear that it was not the most comfortable environment to work in. She felt isolated as the only Black woman in the cast, and she has expressed that she faced microaggressions regarding her hair.
Another concern is how producers could mishandle storylines. Many people have commented that Murphy’s recent work is inaccurate and hurtful. He recently created Monster: The Lizzie Borden Story based on the life of Borden, who people alleged killed her father and stepmother. She was actually found not guilty of the crime, yet Murphy portrayed it as though she actually killed them. This raises the question of whether Murphy’s goal is to create realistic content or exaggerated entertainment.
Fans worry that the producers will not preserve and respect the work of cast members who are no longer with us. Both Cory Monteith, who played Finn Hudson, and Naya Rivera, who played Santana Lopez, were main characters that greatly contributed to the show’s success, and continuing it without them would not be the same.
Fans have expressed concern that the show will mishandle Lopez’s storyline following Rivera’s death in 2020. Lopez resonated with a lot of fans through the LGBTQ+ representation of her same-sex relationship with Brittany Pierce. Because of this, people believe that if the reboot were to happen, there should be a whole new cast to honor this legacy.
Most people are optimistic about Glee reemerging in the media; however, they hope for unique content. The issue most reboots face is that they rely heavily on nostalgia without focusing on keeping people engaged. People may feel like it is just a repeat of the original show and not tune in.
Ultimately, Murphy’s plans to recreate the cult classic are in the early stages of development, but this has not stopped people from discussing potential concepts for it. Murphy needs to remember why so many people loved Glee while also recognizing the flaws. He can create a new show that enhances the quality by listening to his fans’ criticism. He can turn this cult classic into a mainstream success that new generations can relate to.
